Week two of our REACH series at Oneighty went something like this.
I had a complete bedroom set on stage. Bed, dresser, light, mini table stand the whole deal. The room was a mess. There were clothes, pizza boxes, and soda cans thrown all over the place. I also had magazines, notes and a diary hidden in the room as well. It looked just like a typical teenagers room. It was an absolute train wreck.
That night I talked about how your room is the most intimate part of your home. If I wanted to know the real you, all I would need to do is go into your room and start looking around. Because who you really are can be found in your bed room.
When it comes to our room we go through seasons where we clean it up, and we love how it feels when its clean. But very quickly you revert back to your old ways, throw clothes wherever you want, leave pizza boxes out on the floor, and keep things hidden once again. We hate it, we wanted to keep it clean, but "the mess" just seems to come back again.
The same can be said for your heart. Your heart is the most intimate part of you. Who you really are is found deep inside your heart. Often times our heart is a lot like our room. It's a mess. We have dirty laundry, old stuff, other peoples junk and things that we are hiding from everyone we know.
Just like our room, we go through seasons where we draw a line in the sand and say NO MORE, but very quickly revert back to who we really are and how things used to be.
So how do you stop the cycle? How do you reach in and clean up your mess for good?
David (a man who from time to time had a very messy heart) once pleaded with God to "create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit in me".
If we are ever going to reach in and clean up our mess, we are going to have to do the exact same thing that David did.
1) Be honest with yourself.
2) Be honest with God.
3) Be willing to change something.
If you and I will do these three things on a weekly basis, our heart, who we really are will be clean.
