Learn to Delegate, not Dump.

If we as leaders are ever going to reach our full potential, it is imperative that we begin to master the art of delegation. Effectively delegating to a team member is one of the most powerful things we can ever do. Delegation allows another person to have a valued place in the ministry and it also gives us as a leader one of our most valuable assets...more time. When you properly delegate you will have more time to pray, more time to strategize, more time to focus on the things you are most passionate and skilled at doing.

The biggest issue of delegation is not simply doing it, but doing it properly. Pastor George often states, that "delegation without definition leads to disaster". Every time we ask someone on our team to begin to run with something that we need them to do, it is our responsibility as the leader to clearly define the lanes we want them to run in.

Here are Three S's of that will help you delegate properly.

SPEAK IT
Make an effort to clearly speak to each worker about the details of what they are suppose to do and how those details are important to the vision of the ministry they are serving in. This conversation can take place one on one or it could be done in a corporate group setting. But, you must verbally let them know what it is you are asking them to do.

SPELL IT
As a leader you have to spell it out in writing.
People are very busy. Even if you give a great speech or clearly define what you need them to do, there is a chance after time they could forget a few details or take something that you said, out of context. Because of this make sure that you spell out, these three things in writing.
1) The big picture. Let them know the vision and goal of the ministry they are serving in.
2) The expectations and guidelines of the task.
3) The details of the job you are asking them to perform.

SLOWLY RELEASE
This is where most leaders struggle. We think because we talked to them and put together a nice job description that we can simply hand it over and then walk away. That is not delegating that is dumping. I have found that if I do not slowly release the ministry that I am asking someone to run, that within a few short months, either I have to go back and fix something or begin to run it once again myself. For me, neither of those choices are very good.

Here are four steps that will help you slowly release.

I DO...get with your worker and let them simply watch you perform the task.

WE DO...next allow them to work alongside of you.

YOU DO and I WATCH...spend some time observing them, giving complements and criticism when needed.

YOU DO...they have learned from you and now they are ready to succeed on their own.

When it comes to delegating and not dumping, the three S's work.
So the next time you need to delegate be sure to Speak it - Spell it and Slowly Release. You will be glad you did.
