Inked - Bearing the marks of your Savior

Recently my four book series titled "What do I do when?" was released by Harrison House.  I'm currently working on my next book series titled INKED - bearing the marks of your savior.

Here is the low down on the first book.

In the world today there are two types of people.  People who have tattoos and people that don’t. 

Inside the world of people that have tattoos there are two types of people.  People who have a tattoo but they put it somewhere that is hard to see, like their ankle, their shoulder or their back. So in theory they have a tattoo but in reality it is always covered up. No one even knows its there until the person with the tattoo wants them to. The tattoo is hidden. 

Then there are the people that have a tattoo and are proud of it.  They put their ink on their forearm, their neck, or their bicep so the entire world can see the tattoo.  They want everyone they come in contact with to see their ink, they want them to know that they have been marked.

Now lets look at this a different way.  In the world today there are two types of people, people who love Jesus and people who don’t. 

Now inside of the religious world of people that love Jesus there are two types of people. 

First there are the people that say they love Jesus but they barely show it, they keep their faith, their beliefs, and their convictions totally to themselves. In theory they love Jesus (they go to church and youth group) but in reality there has been no real change in the way they live.  No one can see the imprint, the mark that Jesus has made on his or her life.

Secondly, there are the people that loves Jesus and they are proud of it.  They have allowed Jesus to make his mark on their mind, their heart, their emotions, and the way they treat other people so permanent, so bold that everyone they come in contact with can easily see Jesus and the difference he has made in their life.  These Christians proudly carry the marks of their Savior.

When you read scripture it becomes very obvious the Jesus wants to change us so drastically that it is as noticeable as a tattoo on a persons body.  He wants to mark us.  So what are the markings (the tattoos if you will) that Jesus wants us to show the world?

They can be found in Galatians 5:22-26

Love - Joy - Peace - Kindness - Goodness - Faithfulness - Gentleness - Self Control

I'm very excited about this project.  The goal if this book is to give teenagers as well as adults permission to get INKED, and proudly bare the marks of their Savior.

Social Issues

Ok, so I've got to be totally honest, I'm not one to jump on the band wagon of the latest social issue thats out there. Sometimes I think people are more about raising awareness than actually making a difference, so right or wrong it is easy for me to shrug some of that stuff off.

With that being said, several months ago in my study time I read these words from the bible..."I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink...as you have done this to the least of these, you have done also to me." As I read those words, while sipping a totally pure glass of ice water, I realized, this is one social issue that I can get behind.

I recently read that nearly 1 billion people don't have safe water to drink and that close to every 15 seconds a child dies because of lack of clean drinking water. Wether you are "into" the social issue thing or not, you have to agree that this is totally unacceptable. Somebody needs to do something.

This Holiday Season that someone is ONEIGHTY. 

On November 2nd and 9th I'm inviting every teenager and college student from the Tulsa area to show up at Oneighty with a friend and some money to give towards building a water well in the continent of Africa. A complete clean water well that will serve hundreds of adults and children with pure water only cost $4,500. So we are going to build them one.

I know it is totally politically incorrect to say, but I'm not really into the "social issue" thing, however, I am very much into giving families clean water to drink.

Want more money?

A few years ago, I was invited to go to a friends house to go Bass Fishing is his private pond.  This place was incredible!  Totally surrounded by woods and totally stocked with monstrous bass.  My son and I each had a pole in the water and we were sitting on the side of the lake but not really having to much luck. We had caught a couple of small fish but no really big strikes.  

Then the owner of the lake came up to me and said - Kevin I've stocked this pond with bass, the more poles you have in the water the better your chances of catching more fish.  So, I took his advice and put a couple more poles in the water and sure enough within a few minutes I had caught the largest fish I'd ever caught. But it did not stop there, I put another pole in and caught yet another one.  In fact we caught a ton of bass that day and a lot of it had to do with the fact that we had more than one pole in the water.

When it comes to money, you need to understand that, God is the owner of everything, in fact the bible says "the earth is the Lords and everything in it".  God is like the owner of this private pond, but he has not stocked the world with bass, he has stocked it with money.  The reason some people don't catch as much money as they want or they need to survive is because they are only fishing with one pole in God's money pond.

If you want more money, the best thing you can do is put another pole in God's pond.  That means take on two jobs.  One job as your regular source of income and another as a secondary income.  The more you use your free time wisely, the more poles you have in the water, the more money you will reel into your wallet.

I have four poles in God's money pond.

First Pole.

I'm a youth pastor.  I have the extreme honor of serving Pastor Willie George as his youth pastor. This is the reason I was put on the planet.  I love him, and I love serving his vision to reach teenagers.

Second Pole.

I'm an author.  Each Saturday morning and one evening a week a write.  In fact, I've just released four books with my good friends at Harrison House Publishing called "What do I do when" and they want me to keep writing even more books for them in the future.

Third Pole.

From time to time I consult with youth pastors via phone calls to help them grow into the leader God would have them be.

Fourth Pole.

I travel and speak from time to time at Leadership Conferences, Camps and Retreats.  Because of my duties, and what God has called me to do at Church on the Move, I do not speak out all that often.  But from time to time I will travel and minister to leaders and teenagers.

I'm sure you've heard this before but God is your source.  Your job, your boss, your bank and your President are not your source of income and security...God is.  So get plugged into your source.  Work hard and smart for you employer, then in your free time, find something you love to do, maybe a natural gifting that you have and use it to serve the people around you. If you do, you will get more money.

In other words, if you want more money...put another pole in the pond.

SIX things you DON'T need from your team.

Leon Fountain, a pastor of one of the largest churches in Canada, came and spoke at Church on the Move a few weeks ago.  Leon is an incredible leader.  I listen to his leadership stuff off and on and a few months ago I came across this "gem" of a lesson.

Here are SIX things you DON'T need from your team.

1) Private agendas.

2) Poorly tuned ears.

3) Lack of caring.

4) Hurts.

5) Small thinking.

6) Pettiness.

If you get any of these things from anyone on your team…help that person try and overcome the issues they are struggling with, if for whatever reason over time they are not able to check these things at the door.  You may need to help your team member find a new team to play on.

Time of Reflection.

I absolutely love youth ministry.  Since 1992 I have had the honor of working with teenagers, trying my best to help them draw closer to Jesus Christ.  I've had some good times and some not so good.

Here are some of the day's I'd like to forget....

I remember one time having a message that I just knew God wanted me to speak to the entire group. That night one kid showed up.  ONE!  So I preached that message to that one kid....awkward...yes!  But I preached it none the less.

One time we had a big car wash planned and only three people showed up, myself, my 5 year old son, and one teenager from the group.  Needless to say, we did not make much money that day.

One night we had an entire busload of students that was so bad, I had the driver turn the bus around and take all 60 students back to the pick up point, they were so ticked off at me....I loved it!

We took a group of 30 or so students on a missions trip to Florida.  During the trip a few of my students gave their heart to the Lord.  I guess that's good...but the missions trip would have gone a lot better if the kids I took to share Jesus would have actually known him before they started witnessing!

I took a group of 10 kids on a missions trip to Arizona.  While we were there one of the students went off by himself and started painting...that would not have been to bad, except he was painting the wrong building!  He was painting the Pastors House!

Here are some things I will never forget....

Taking a trip to Cedar Point walking around with a young 6th grader and his friend.  Talking and laughing, having a great time.  Today that 6th grader is studying to be a missionary.

Meeting with 50 or so hand selected students once a month for a year, training them about how to study the bible, being a leader and growing in God.  Today 5 of those students are in full time ministry.

My Pastor from Ligonier, Indiana (Bill Parks) taking me to Tulsa, Oklahoma to hear Pastor Willie George share God's vision for reaching teenagers.

The opening night of our XTREME YOUTH CENTER in Ligonier, Indiana and sharing Jesus with more teenagers than I had ever talked to at one time....65.

Hearing God tell me "Your Time in Ligonier is almost over"  then 2 hours later getting a phone call from another Pastor, I did not know, asking me if I would like to be his Youth Pastor.

Two months later, leaving all family and friends and moving 5 hours away, because we knew that is what God had called us to do.

Gabe, one of my teenagers that went from outcast to trusted friend, saying the words "find another me...." just before we moved to Madison, Indiana.

Moving to Tulsa, to serve on staff at Oneighty.

The day Pastor George called me to his office and asked if I would accept the position as Oneighty's Youth Pastor.  

Seeing my 17 year old son, play in the Oneighty worship band for the very first time.

You know the list of things that I never want to forget is so big, I have to stop writing or it will go on forever.  God has been so good to me and you know what he had been good to you as well.

Today, in fact right now, why don't you stop what your doing and take some time to reflect on the incredible journey God has taken you and your family on the past few years.  You will be glad you did.
